The Need for Muscle Care
In order to prevent problems occurring you have to minimise the risk and the observant owner/rider should be able to recognise any subtle changes in the horse that might show pain or discomfort.
Unfortunately the horse cannot verbally tell use they are sore so they give us signs, it up to us to read them

For all types of horses whether they are racehorses or pleasure ponies, should have the ability to reach their full athletic potential.
The importance of correctly fitted tack
Tack, which does not fit correctly, can cause a variety of problems as shortening of stride, stiffness, hollowing and resisting. Potential major problems could involve such things as bucking, bad temper, napping and rearing. If the saddle does not fit properly, the horse is unable to perform at its best, and similarly with other tack.
Horse must be able to use all their muscles easily, even under the saddle, to ensure the hocks can engage, produce lengthening and allow the top line to develop.
If pain is present, it is physically impossible for the horse to work into a natural outline, no matter what artificial aids - draw reins, side reins, strong bits, spurs - are used.
